The KX-2020 is a two-head, single-capstan design with a full logic control transport — meaning all mechanical functions (play, record, rewind, fast forward, pause, stop) are electronically governed rather than directly mechanically actuated. This allows the transport to switch cleanly between functions without risk of tape stress and gives the deck a more controlled, reliable feel in day-to-day use. The single combined record/playback head means that off-tape monitoring during recording is not available, which is the principal functional difference between a two-head design and a three-head machine; this is a normal characteristic for this class of deck.
Tape compatibility covers normal (Type I), chrome (Type II/CrO2), and metal (Type IV) formulations, with the tape selector switch providing the appropriate bias and equalisation for each. Dolby B noise reduction offers around 10dB of noise reduction across the upper frequencies, while Dolby C extends this to approximately 20dB, making a noticeable difference in background noise with well-maintained heads and good quality tape. HX Pro is not a noise reduction system but a headroom extension technology developed by Bang & Olufsen and licenced by Dolby: it adjusts the recording bias in real time in response to high-frequency programme content, reducing saturation and improving transient accuracy, particularly on less expensive tape formulations. Crucially, HX Pro encoding requires no corresponding decoding on playback — tapes recorded with HX Pro play back correctly on any cassette deck.
The DPSS (Direct Program Search System) allows the deck to scan forward or backward to the next silent gap between recordings, making it straightforward to locate individual tracks on a tape. The CCRS (Computer Controlled CD Recording System) socket — visible on the rear panel — allows the deck to be connected to a compatible Kenwood CD player, enabling the deck to start recording automatically when the CD player begins playback. A peak-reading LED level meter is provided on the front panel, along with separate record level and record balance controls, and a headphone output with its own volume control.
