KEF Kefkit 1 (Type SP1045) Loudspeakers

This is a pair of KEF Kefkit 1 loudspeakers, badged on the rear as Type SP1045. KEF, founded in Maidstone, Kent in 1961 by BBC engineer Raymond Cooke, became known through the 1970s and 80s both for its own finished loudspeaker ranges and for supplying high-quality drive units and complete speaker kits to the DIY market, allowing enthusiasts to build cabinets of professional standard around KEF-engineered components. The Kefkit 1 was one such kit, sold as a self-assembly loudspeaker package. This pair is finished in gloss black, with the original cloth grilles and KEF badge to each front panel, and has been checked over by Andrew in our workshop.

Condition: Grade B — Very Good. There are some marks to the gloss black cabinet finish; please refer to our photographs for a full assessment of cosmetic condition.

Description

Key Features

The Kefkit 1 is a two-way design, pairing a substantial bass/midrange driver with a dedicated tweeter, in keeping with the general approach KEF took across its range of self-build kits during this period, which also drew on drivers used in some of the company’s own finished speaker ranges. Being sold originally as a kit, the quality of the final cabinet varied depending on the builder, and this pair shows a good standard of cabinet construction and finish. As with any speaker system of this vintage, careful setup and correct crossover function contribute significantly to the sound achieved, and these have been checked and tested by Andrew as functioning correctly.

Important Owner’s Notes

As a self-assembly kit speaker, cabinet construction quality can vary from the original builder, though this pair presents well. As with all vintage loudspeakers, the crossover components are original and have not been serviced; a full service, including crossover capacitor renewal, is something some owners choose to have carried out on speakers of this age, and we would be happy to discuss this further.
