Technics SB-3030 3-Way Loudspeakers — Grade B (Very Good), Minor Marks | Tested by Andrew

This is a pair of Technics SB-3030 loudspeakers, a three-way sealed-box design manufactured by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd in Japan, dating from the early 1980s. Technics built a strong reputation during this period for well-engineered, honestly specified loudspeakers to partner its extensive amplifier and turntable ranges, and the SB-3030 is a compact but capable design offering a genuine three-way driver layout in a modestly sized cabinet. This pair is finished in a woodgrain vinyl wrap with grey cloth grilles, and has been checked over by Andrew in our workshop.

Condition: Grade B — Very Good. Minor marks are present; please refer to our photographs for a full assessment of cosmetic condition.

Description

Key Features

The SB-3030 uses a sealed acoustic suspension enclosure housing three dedicated drivers: a 200mm cone woofer for bass duties, a 60mm cone midrange driver, and a 14mm dome tweeter for the top end, crossing over at 3kHz and 4kHz to keep each driver working within its intended range. This genuine three-way arrangement, rather than a simplified two-way design with an add-on supertweeter, was a point of distinction for Technics’ mid-range speakers of this era, and contributes to the “impressive bass in a solid three-way configuration” for which the model has been noted. Rear-mounted spring terminals allow simple, tool-free speaker cable connection, and the cabinets are a compact standmount size, making them easy to accommodate in most rooms while retaining genuine three-way separation of frequencies.

Important Owner’s Notes

As with all vintage loudspeakers, the crossover components and driver surrounds are original and have not been serviced. They are functioning correctly, but buyers should be aware that a full service, including crossover capacitor renewal, is something some owners choose to have carried out on speakers of this age as a precautionary measure; we would be happy to discuss this further.
