Sony CDP-491 Compact Disc Player — Grade A (Excellent) | No Remote Control | Fully Tested

The Sony CDP-491 is a single-disc CD player from the early 1990s, built to Sony’s typically high standard of the era with genuine hi-fi separates styling. It uses Sony’s High Density Linear Converter and Pulse D/A conversion for playback, alongside a useful set of everyday features including music scan, shuffle, programmable track order, and a headphone jack with its own volume control. This unit has been fully tested and inspected by Andrew in our workshop.

The CDP-491 is built around Sony’s KSS-240A laser mechanism paired with the CXD2552AQ digital converter, offering accurate, reliable disc reading along with Direct Digital Sync for stable playback. Everyday convenience features include Music Scan for previewing the opening bars of each track, Shuffle Play for randomised playback, full track programming with edit capability, and a Peak Search function for locating the loudest point on a disc — a feature aimed at setting recording levels when taping from CD. A front-panel headphone jack with its own dedicated volume control allows private listening independent of the main system volume.
