High-Torque Direct Drive
The AT-LP140XP uses a direct-drive system in which the platter is driven directly by the motor rather than through a belt.
Audio-Technica specifies starting torque of more than 2.2kgf·cm, providing the rapid response expected from a professional-style turntable. An electronic braking system also brings the platter to a controlled stop.
This makes the AT-LP140XP well suited to both conventional record playback and more hands-on use where speed stability and fast start-up are important.
Quartz-Locked Speed & Adjustable Pitch
The turntable offers three speeds:
The quartz function locks the platter to its correct standard speed regardless of the pitch slider position.
For applications requiring manual speed adjustment, selectable pitch ranges of ±8%, ±16% and ±24% are available. The illuminated strobe markings around the platter provide a visual reference for checking speed accuracy.
S-Shaped Tonearm
The AT-LP140XP uses a static-balanced S-shaped tonearm with an effective length of 230.5mm.
The detachable headshell arrangement makes cartridge changes straightforward, particularly useful for users who want separate cartridges for LPs, 78rpm records or DJ use.
Tracking force is adjustable from 0–4g, while the arm also provides adjustable anti-skate and height control.
AT-XP3 VM Cartridge Included
Audio-Technica supplies the turntable with its AT-XP3 dual-moving-magnet cartridge, mounted to an AT-HS6 headshell.
The XP3 uses a durable 0.6mil bonded conical stylus and is intended to combine the robust characteristics required for professional use with good sound quality for conventional vinyl playback.
Its relatively healthy 5.5mV output also makes it an easy match for most standard moving-magnet phono stages.
No Built-In Phono Stage
The AT-LP140XP is deliberately kept as a straightforward professional turntable and does not include a built-in phono preamplifier.
It therefore needs to be connected to:
- An amplifier with a MM phono input
- A separate phono stage
- A DJ mixer with a phono input
This approach allows the user to choose the phono electronics that best suit their system.
