JVC T-X1L FM/AM Stereo Tuner — Grade B: Very Good | Analogue Tuner with LED Metering | Tested & Working

The JVC T-X1L is an FM/AM stereo tuner produced by the Victor Company of Japan between 1979 and 1981. It was designed as part of JVC’s A-X/T-X separates range of that era, forming a natural partner to the A-X1 integrated amplifier and sharing the same brushed-silver styling. This example presents in very good condition for its age and has been inspected and tested in our workshop by Andrew.

Condition: Grade B — Very Good — The unit presents well for a tuner of this vintage, with light signs of use consistent with its age. Please refer to our photographs for a full assessment of cosmetic condition.

Description

Key Features

The T-X1L covers FM, Medium Wave, and Long Wave, making it one of the more versatile analogue tuners of its generation — LW coverage was not universal at this price point. Tuning is by analogue dial, with a frequency-linear FM scale that aids accurate station location. A row of LED indicators provides both signal-strength and centre-of-channel information on FM, which is a practical aid when optimising aerial alignment for best reception. FM muting suppresses inter-station noise when scanning. The tuner uses a PLL stereo demodulator for the FM stereo pilot signal, which generally offers stable and accurate stereo decoding compared to older analogue demodulator designs.

FM sensitivity is rated at 0.9µV (10.3dBf) for usable sensitivity, with 50dB quieting reached at 1.5µV mono and 22.5µV stereo — figures that put it comfortably in the capable-rather-than-compromised category for a domestic tuner of this period. Alternate channel selectivity is 65dB, which is adequate for typical UK urban conditions. Signal-to-noise ratio is quoted at 82dB mono and 70dB stereo, and total harmonic distortion at 0.15% mono — both respectable for the class. Stereo separation is quoted at 45dB at 1kHz. The single fixed-level output is rated at 600mV into 3.3kΩ, which is compatible with standard line-level inputs on amplifiers of the period and after.
