Description

The C542 is built around a Burr-Brown PCM1732U delta-sigma 20-bit digital-to-analogue converter, which provides a smooth and detailed presentation that has earned the model a favourable reputation amongst listeners seeking musicality at a sensible price point. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled with a measured approach — the PCM1732U is a capable chipset that focuses on accurate reconstruction rather than specification chasing, and the result is a player that communicates the substance of a recording without undue emphasis on any particular frequency range.
The transport mechanism is the Sony KSS-213C, a well-regarded and widely supported laser assembly that has proven reliable over the long term and remains serviceable should the need arise in future. The player supports standard 12cm and 80mm discs, along with CD-R and CD-RW formats, and includes HDCD decoding for compatible discs.
Both coaxial and optical digital outputs are provided, allowing the C542 to function as a transport feeding an external DAC if preferred, whilst the analogue outputs use standard RCA phono connections. A headphone output is fitted on the front panel with its own volume control, adding a degree of flexibility for private listening. The front panel also includes programme, random, and repeat playback modes, along with a 20-track programming capacity.
