Nakamichi BX-125E Two-Head Cassette Deck — Grade B, Good | Serviced & Calibrated | Fully Tested

The Nakamichi BX-125E is a two-head stereo cassette deck produced by Nakamichi Corporation of Tokyo, Japan, dating from approximately 1985–1986. The E suffix denotes the European export variant, rated at 240V as confirmed on the rear panel of this unit. Nakamichi was founded in 1948 and built an enduring reputation for producing cassette decks of exceptional engineering quality — their flagship models, including the Dragon and ZX-9, remain among the most sought-after cassette decks ever made. The BX-125E was positioned as Nakamichi’s entry into a more affordable price bracket, and was designed explicitly to carry as much of the company’s accumulated head and transport technology downwards into a simpler two-head format as possible. It was manufactured in Japan and each unit received over 30 individual adjustment and calibration steps on the production line as standard practice — a level of quality control unusual at any price point. This example has been serviced and calibrated by Andrew in our workshop and is fully functional throughout. It is supplied as the deck only, without accessories.

Condition: Grade B — Good

This example is in good overall condition. There are light marks on the top cover consistent with age and general use, as visible in the photographs. The front panel presents well with no significant marks. Please refer to our photographs for a full assessment of cosmetic condition.

Key Features

The BX-125E uses a Sendust laminate core record/playback head with an effective gap width of 1.2 microns — the playback limit for 20kHz reproduction at standard cassette tape speed. Sendust, an alloy with a high magnetic saturation flux density of approximately 10,000 gauss, was chosen by Nakamichi for its combination of hardness and magnetic efficiency, giving the head good wear resistance alongside the performance characteristics needed for extended high-frequency response. The erase head uses a dual-gap ferrite design with low high-frequency loss, ensuring effective erasure of even metal tape formulations. The left and right channel circuit board layouts are designed to be mirror-symmetrical, with matched component tolerances and equal signal path lengths on both channels — a refinement more commonly associated with higher-priced equipment.

The transport is a single-capstan design driven by a microprocessor-controlled silent mechanism that uses a dedicated cam-drive motor rather than conventional solenoids to operate the head base and brake. This cam-drive arrangement — also seen on the BX-150 and other BX-series models — gives the transport a notably quiet and controlled action. The head movement on entering Play mode is deliberately two-speed: fast until the head approaches the tape, then slowing before contact to reduce tape stress. Three motors are used in total: a DC servo motor for capstan drive, a separate DC motor for reel drive, and the dedicated cam-drive motor for mechanism control. The metal pulleys in the drive train are machined to tight roundness tolerances to minimise flutter contribution from the tape path itself.

Noise reduction is provided by both Dolby B and Dolby C, selectable independently. The tape selector covers Type I (normal/ferric), Type II (chrome/CrO2), and Type IV (metal) formulations, with a separate equaliser time constant selector for 70µs and 120µs settings. Recording levels are adjustable independently for left and right channels, and a master fader control provides two-speed fade in and fade out at either 2 or 4 second rates — a practical feature for home recording use. Peak level metering is provided by a 2 × 11-segment LED display. An output volume control, headphone output, MPX filter, memory stop, auto-repeat, and timer record/play function complete the feature set. The microprocessor control means all transport functions respond to light button pressure.
