Flexible 5.1-Channel Home Cinema
The HT-R538 provides amplification for a complete 5.1-channel loudspeaker system, including front, centre, surround and powered-subwoofer connections. Its published output is rated at 100 watts per channel into 6 ohms, providing sufficient power for a wide range of compatible home-cinema speakers.
Three HDMI inputs allow several source components to be connected, with a single HDMI output carrying the selected source to a television or projector. The receiver supports 1080p video, 3D pass-through and the original HDMI Audio Return Channel standard.
Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding allow compatible Blu-ray players and other sources to deliver lossless multichannel sound. Optical and coaxial digital inputs are also provided for televisions, CD players and older digital equipment.
Component and composite video connections make the receiver particularly useful for systems containing legacy equipment. An FM/MW tuner, front auxiliary input and headphone socket add further everyday flexibility.

Important Owner’s Notes
This is a 2010-generation home-cinema receiver intended primarily for 1080p and legacy AV systems. It does not provide modern 4K/HDR video pass-through, eARC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or integrated network streaming. Modern video sources can instead be connected directly to a compatible television, with audio returned separately where appropriate.
The HDMI return connection supports the original ARC system rather than the newer eARC format. Compatibility will therefore depend on the television and audio formats being used.
There is no dedicated turntable input, so a conventional record player will require a separate phono stage unless it has one built in.

Summary
A well-equipped Onkyo 5.1-channel AV receiver in A2 condition, showing only minor cosmetic marks. With HDMI connectivity, lossless surround-sound decoding, useful legacy connections and a supplied remote control, it is an excellent basis for a traditional 1080p home-cinema system.
