Description

A Straightforward Amplifier with Vinyl Flexibility

The A-400 developed a strong following for its relatively simple, performance-led approach. Rated at 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms, it has sufficient power for many domestic systems, while Pioneer also specified a DIN output of 85 watts per channel into 4 ohms.

Its switchable phono stage is particularly useful for vinyl listeners, accepting both moving-magnet and lower-output moving-coil cartridges. The MM and MC settings on this example have both been checked and tested.

Additional inputs accommodate a CD player, tuner and line-level source, together with two tape loops for playback and recording. No remote control is supplied, so operation is carried out using the amplifier’s front-panel controls.
