The Rotel RB-850 is a highly regarded dedicated stereo power amplifier from the late 1980s, built to genuine dual mono construction with two separate toroidal transformers, one per channel. It earned a Best Buy award from Hi-Fi Choice magazine in 1989 when paired with its matching RC-850 preamplifier, and has developed a lasting reputation among owners for driving difficult speaker loads cleanly and with a wide, well-defined soundstage — a direct result of its dual mono design. The RB-850’s genuine dual mono construction, with independent power supplies for each channel, is the defining feature behind its performance: this arrangement keeps the channels fully independent of one another, contributing to the wide, stable stereo soundstage the amplifier is well known for among owners and reviewers alike. It can be run as a conventional stereo power amplifier or switched to bridged mono operation via a rear-panel switch, roughly tripling available output into a single channel for use in a bi-amped or mono subwoofer application. As a dedicated power amplifier with no volume control or source switching, the RB-850 is designed to be partnered with a separate preamplifier or a pre-out equipped integrated amplifier.
