The CDP-491 uses Sony’s High Density Linear Converter alongside Pulse D/A conversion, technologies developed to improve resolution and reduce distortion when converting the CD’s digital signal back into an analogue audio waveform. Direct Digital Sync helps maintain accurate timing during playback, contributing to a stable, low-jitter output. Beyond core playback, the unit includes a handful of Sony’s more distinctive period features: Music Scan, which briefly previews the opening seconds of each track in turn so the listener can quickly find what they want to hear, and Fader, which allows tracks to fade in or out gently over a short, user-selectable period rather than starting or stopping abruptly. A front-panel headphone output with its own volume control is also fitted, useful for private listening without involving the rest of the system.
