Sony ST-515 FM/AM Stereo Tuner – A3 Condition | Vintage Sony Program Tuner | Tested by Andrew

The Sony ST-515 is a distinctive Japanese FM/AM stereo tuner from the late 1970s, combining traditional analogue-style tuning with an electronic frequency display and Sony’s unusual Program Sensor system.

Produced around 1977–1979, the ST-515 belongs to a period when Sony was experimenting with new tuning technologies while retaining the appearance and controls of conventional hi-fi separates. Its illuminated tuning scale, digital frequency readout and substantial silver-fronted cabinet make it an interesting match for vintage Sony amplifiers, particularly the TA-515.

Condition: Grade A3 – Good Condition for Age

Good overall condition for its age, with some cosmetic marks from previous use.

Checked and tested by Andrew, with FM stereo reception confirmed working.

Description

Key Features

  • FM stereo and AM reception – Suitable for receiving conventional analogue radio broadcasts.
  • Digital frequency display – Displays the tuned frequency electronically while retaining a traditional tuning knob and scale.
  • Sony Program Sensor system – Allows up to five station positions on each band to be selected using adjustable markers on the tuning scale.
  • PLL quartz-synthesised tuning circuitry – Provides electronically controlled tuning while retaining manual operation.
  • Signal-strength indicator – Helps with aerial positioning and identifying stronger radio signals.
  • FM stereo/mono switching – Allows mono reception when weak signals produce excessive stereo noise.
  • Classic Sony construction – Substantial metal casework and full-width styling from the company’s late-1970s separates range.

Design Highlights

The ST-515 is particularly interesting because of its unusual approach to station selection.

Rather than using conventional electronic preset memories, Sony employed a mechanical marker system linked to electronic tuning circuitry. Once the station markers have been positioned, the Program Sensor function allows the user to select those stations by moving the tuning pointer to the appropriate marker.

This arrangement combines the familiar operation of an analogue tuner with some of the convenience of later preset-based models.

The digital frequency display was also relatively distinctive for its period, providing a more precise frequency indication than relying solely on an analogue tuning scale.

Vintage Tuner Note

The ST-515 receives conventional analogue FM and AM broadcasts. It does not support DAB, DAB+ or internet radio.

Reception quality depends on local coverage and the connected aerial. As with any vintage tuner, age-related considerations apply to switches, tuning components and display circuitry.
