Description

Connect Vintage Stax Earspeakers to Your Amplifier

The SRD-6SB provides the interface between a conventional speaker amplifier and compatible Stax electrostatic earspeakers. Its transformers step up the audio signal to the level required by the electrostatic drivers.

For an owner with a suitable amplifier already in the system, an adaptor of this type provides a route to using vintage Stax headphones without a separate dedicated driver amplifier.

Self-Bias Operation

The SB designation identifies the self-bias design, which derives the bias supply from the incoming audio signal. The adaptor therefore operates without its own mains connection, while still requiring an external amplifier to supply the music signal and power.

Check Normal-Bias Compatibility

This model belongs to the older Normal-bias Stax system, associated with the six-pin connection and nominal 230V bias. It does not provide a 580V Pro-bias output. A five-pin Pro-bias headphone requires a suitable Pro-bias driver for its intended performance.

Technical Details

Important Owner’s Notes

Use the amplifier’s speaker outputs; a source component’s line output cannot drive this adaptor directly. Conventional dynamic headphones with a 3.5mm or 6.35mm plug also require a different type of headphone connection.

Switch the amplifier off before making connections, observe channel and polarity markings, and begin listening with volume low.
