Cranage 2024. Stuarts Retirement
We have visited Cranage on a number of occasions over the years.. but in 2023 chose to take a room and promote our wee shop out to the thousands of North West folks that visit the show.
This brought a lot of recognition and publicity, so we did Cranage again in 2024 , this time not only taking our own room, but manning the ‘Project/Rose hifi’ room on their behalf and as this was the final public appearance of Stuart , our long serving Shop manager, many of our ‘music club’ came out to give him a grand send off.
At the same time, Callum, David’s son & 3rd Generation Wilkinson, joins the shop staff as a knowledgeable young gent full of enthusiasm.

Taran, our friend, customer and owner of ‘The British Audiophile’ Youtube channel dropped by to wish us well at our recent 50th anniversary celebrations.
His channel is well worth a visit for great videos with reviews on a whole range of Hi-Fi items
JVC QL-A7
On the bench yesterday. JVC QL-A7. (TT-71 motor unit) This hadn’t run for a few years and although it would turn, didn’t keep good speed. I recapped all the electrolytics as some of the smaller ones had corrosion on their legs.. set up the adjustments and it runs well again.
I thought this may be the same internals as a TT-101 (QL10) but without the counter module…as we did 2 of those last year, but it is a totally different machine. The TT101 is all transistors, maybe 100 of them..no IC’s. The QLA7 has just 1 IC.
We see many of this type of early direct drive deck from a range of manufacturers. Almost all can be restored to running condition.

LD3141 IC’s. We are now selling modern made copies
The original LD3141 amplifier chips for the Akai 4000 series are now no longer available.
Currently plenty in stock
There are some out there offering NOS ones… but these are 40 years old too !
Each Akai 4000 has 4 of these and the GX-280 and 1730 has a pair…. and often one will have failed giving no playback or record on one channel. You can also get lots of hiss or crackles when these fail too. Even when working, they are hissy.. the new ones are much quieter.
A lot of hiss can also come from the C458 transistors on the panel too, so its worth changing those.. and if you want some just ask when buying these modules and I’ll send some FOC
I have had a good friend make batches of these here in the UK using decent transistors, to offer them now as an equivalent replacement for the LD3141. Its a delicate soldering job – 9 pins to de solder and then re-solder, so some soldering skills are required.
50+ already out and working fine.. all are tested upon manufacture.

RIP Steve Wright.
It is with great sadness we report the passing of our long time friend, customer, Music club founder member & Linn service engineer Steve this week.
Steve, though retired, still spent 2 days a week with us, to enjoy the companionship of us all & his passion of setting up Linn LP12 decks & similar turntables. He became one of the team and brought a warm friendliness to the shop whenever he came… as well as a supply of sandwiches, crisps and biscuits.. . He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Jane and his family at this difficult time.
Andy Kershaw… take 2
The BBC have been at our little shop recording again.. for another cameo appearance on Radio 3, travels with Andy Kershaw, reminiscing over his vast collection of music and interviews made on his Sony Walkman pro over 20 years in the 80s and 90s.
We chat with Andy, explaining the popularity of the resurgence of interest in the cassette… brought on mostly due to lockdown , when many were brought out of the attics and cupboards around the nation..

BBC Radio 3 x Wilkinson’s HiFi
The BBC & Andy Kershaw have been recording in our little shop. It is for a 2 part series replaying recovered interviews & impromptu music performances he recorded onto cassette in the 80’s & 90’s. Andy travelled the world interviewing the many music legends & recording them on his Sony Walkman Pro.
We were able to repair his trusty battered Walkman for him, despite the years of use and plenty of Saharan sand. It’s been fantastic hearing those unscripted interviews with such greats from Willie Nelson through to Warren Zevon.
Our segment leads off his programme, discussing the Sony Walkman and how it changed the face of journalism. Being of broadcast quality, yet so small, It allowed him to travel the world & record interviews and music concerts without lugging a suitcase full of equipment. It’s microphone was great for capturing both voices & instruments, no matter what the room they were in and being so small kept the performers relaxed as if they were just playing for Andy
The shows went out on Radio 3, Sunday 20th & 27th September @ 7:00pm, where you heard Andy’s wonderful northern accent…& our Andrews not so gravelly one!

The Ortofon Cartridge Experience Tour
On Saturday September 14th, in conjunction with our friends at Henley Audio, we are having a demonstration of a range of Ortofon Cartridges including the incredible MC Anna Diamond.
